Columbia Heights is a diverse neighborhood in northwest DC. It comprises the roughly rectangular area between Sherman Ave on the west, Florida Ave on the south, 16th Street on the west, and Spring Road on the north. The neighborhood is known for its diversity as it is home to many recent immigrants from all over the world offering their own culinary and artistic flair.
The name Columbia Heights originates from Columbian College built in the neighborhood in the early 1800s. Columbian College eventually became known as George Washington University and changed campus locations. But in the late 1800s, Senator John Sherman began developing a subdivision in the neighborhood and called it Columbia Heights after Columbian College. The “heights” part is clear as the neighborhood has soaring views of downtown DC.
With its diversity, Columbia Heights is home to many ethnic restaurants. It also has a lively nightlife scene, prominent art and cultural institutions, and big box and boutique retail establishments.
