DC’s most iconic and well-known neighborhood is undoubtedly Georgetown. Georgetown comprises the historic and idyllic neighborhood between Rock Creek on the east, the Potomac River on the South, the Glover Archibald Park on the west, and Reservoir and Whitehaven Street on the north. Founded in the middle of the 1700s as the Port of Georgetown, the neighborhood existed almost 40 years before the city of DC itself. There is uncertainty whether Georgetown is named for King George II of Great Britain or the founders of the neighborhood George Gordon and George Beall.
Georgetown is both a bustling commercial and entertainment district as well as a historic residential neighborhood. Its commercial district centered around M Street include boutiques, luxury retailers, elegant restaurants, and other famous destinations like Georgetown Cupcakes.
The neighborhood includes Georgetown University, several embassies, and the Old Stone House – DC’s oldest home built in 1765. Georgetown also offers some outdoor activities with the redevelopment of the waterfront, the Capital Crescent Trail, Rock Creek Park, and Glover Archibald Park.
