The Navy Yard neighborhood is named for the Washington Navy Yard – the U.S. Navy’s longest continuously operated federal facility. Originally established in 1799, the Navy yard nautical center today employs about 16,000 people.
The Navy Yard neighborhood is bounded by the Anacostia River on the south and east, the Interstate 695 highway on the north, and South Capitol Street SW on the west. This location along the river gives the neighborhood an alias – the Capitol Riverfront.
The neighborhood underwent recent revitalization when the city’s major league baseball team – the Nationals – built their home stadium in the neighborhood in 2008. After that, commercial and residential construction boomed and dramatically changed the neighborhood in a short period of time.
The residential component of Navy Yard is – pun intended – anchored by the Yards, a 42 acre mixed-use development. This includes riverside parks, a pedestrian pavilion, and many popular restaurants.
